About the Judaroo Pony Stud

The seeds for Judaroo Pony Stud were sewn in the late 1940’s and 1950’s when a young Jan decided that she wanted a horse. Her father saved an ex-trotter from the knackers and Jan had her horse on the family farm at Yealering. Then in the early 70’s, now married to David and with daughters of her own, the desire for ponies was still there. David was more interested in cattle so Jan went off and bought an aged Welsh Mountain mare of Koojan stock named Warrine Number 11 or “Tiny” as she was affectionately known. In the mean time Tiny was seized by the bailiff as her previous owner had not paid for her. This lead to David becoming involved and Tiny became a member of the family.
This was the beginning of Judaroo Pony Stud. Once we had a pony David’s cattle took a back seat to setting up what has become Judaroo Pony Stud. There had also been two horses bought for the girls to ride.“Dusty” was a lovely little horse who gave the girls, particularly Judy much enjoyment. The other a mare, Honey was the grand daughter of a Perth Cup winner - England’s Dust. She was a bit of a challenge to ride and Carey was not known for her great bravery so Honey was put into foal using Retford Doublelight a stallion owned by the late Margaret Campbell. She produced Judaroo Honeybee who was a Foundation B mare and produced many lovely ponies for the stud. There is still, and will be in the years to come, evidence of Honey’s contribution to the stud.
Anxious to get more ponies David, Jan and two week old Kathryn took off up north with an old friend John Price. There they bought 12 unhandled Koojan ponies many descendants from the famous Greylight. They came to Perth by train and then truck. Although none of our current ponies are descendants of these lovely ponies they gave us a base to start our stud.
The girls were very fortunate to have holidays at Margaret Campbell’s Balmoral Pony Stud in Serpentine where Delys Watt was working at the time and these trips taught them a lot and much fun was had by all.
Now, having a group of mares it was time to purchase a stallion, and as it was almost impossible to buy Welsh Mountain ponies in Australia, our first purchase of pure bred stock was from New Zealand.
